If you're a beginner, it's very important to start with the essentials and work your way up. You must understand the basic techniques first and learn how to correctly apply them. It's crucial to learn how to play correctly from the very start - developing good habits will quickly set you on the right track.
It's also important to not get ahead of yourself. This can hurt your drumming and slow your process of learning. It's very easy to develop bad habits that can impact your playing later down the line.
There is a lot to learn, from the very basics like how to hold drumsticks, count time, tune a drum set, read drum notation, to more advanced techniques and concepts.
While all this may sound daunting, you shouldn't worry too much. With the right instructions and proper guidance it can all be learned relatively smoothly and quickly. But you will have to be committed to achieving your goals.
The most effective way to learn drums is by following well structured lessons that will guide you from start to finish. Guidance is crucial. Of course, it would be best to hire a private tutor, but they usually cost quite a bit of money. The next best thing are lessons on DVDs. There are quite a few on the market, but choose wisely, because not all are created equal.
The most comprehensive DVD drumming course that I know of is Learn and Master Drums with Dann Sherrill. Highly recommend to all aspiring drummers.
With proper guidance and proper commitment, anyone can learn how to play drums. It's not as hard as most people think, however, it's definitely not easy either. Remember, there is much more to drums than just hitting something with a stick.
