My goal, above all, is to steer you into the right direction and make your learning experience as smooth and frustration-free as possible. But first...
Let's Be Honest, Shall We?
Allow me to be totally blunt with you: Drums are NOT an easy instrument! Whether you want to learn them seriously or just want to have fun, it's important that you approach the subject with the right attitude.
So I'm not going to tell you how super easy everything is and how you'll learn to play like a pro in 6 days. Because you won't. Drums are NOT easy and if anyone tells you differently, they're lying.
Okay, sorry about that. It's just that I have seen so many beginners handicap themselves from the very start because of the wrong approach. This usually translates into discouragement, frustration and, ultimately, resignation. And I don't want this to happen to you! So...
What Does It Take To Learn Drums?
There are three main requirements:
- Good instructions (see Drum Lessons On DVD)
- Commitment (meaning regular practice)
- and realistic expectations
I know I'm talking a lot about how learning drums is not easy (which it's true), but with the right approach you can definitely make it much easier. It's all in the right approach. So...
What Is The Right Approach?
The right approach means a solid, realistic and committed plan. In other words - well-structured lessons. Every time you sit down to learn, you need a very clear concept of what you're going to do.
One of the biggest mistakes novices make is that they search for tidbits of information all over the internet and learn a bit here and a bit there. That is not what I call a well-structured learning plan. It's actually a surefire way to develop bad habits and eventually get discouraged. My advice: Don't do it.
Far better way is to find quality lessons and stick with them. This will pay big dividends in terms of improving your skills and saving your time. You will definitely learn faster and better. The only question is - where to find quality lessons?
Drum Lessons For Beginners And Beyond
I have certainly seen my share of drum lessons in many different formats - from books, to DVDs, online lessons, and software. I can say without hesitation that most of them don't deliver what they promise. Luckily, however, there are a few exceptions. If you want my recommendation, here it is - Learn & Master Drums with Dann Sherrill. This is the most comprehensive drum course that I have seen so far and is what I recommend to all aspiring drummers.
The bottom line: If you're really serious about becoming a good drummer, then don't waste anymore of your time looking for tidbits of information all over the internet - get serious, get Learn & Master Drums and stick with it. I guarantee you - you will become a confident drummer in a very reasonable amount of time.
If, on the other hand, you feel you're not quite ready yet for serious instructions, don't worry, just take your time. Feel free to browse this website, try to learn as much as possible about this fun and wonderful instrument and when you're ready - take it to the next level. You'll love it there.
